Charlotte is on page 174 of 256 of Manual of Psychomagic: The Practice of Shamanic Psychotherapy
Yep, I'm reading a total crackpot book. And yet...in spite of completely unacceptable remedies (you really do not want to know)...his descriptions of human problems, prior to assigning a cure, is often spot on. I've never made it thru one of his insane movies, and I'm not much for surrealism, but it's still an intriguing read.

I'm reading these at the same time because The Twenties is not good about identifying people. Reading the letters at the same time helps single out the very important people in EW's life. Also, the letters relieve the reader of his purple prose, which he uses only when he's not talking about people. At some point, he stopped describing sunsets and songbirds, thankfully.

I've had an intention this year to only read books longer than 400 pages. I am giving up this idea. Sometimes I just don't want to be with the author for that long. I'd like more variety. Going forward I'm returning to my alphabetic approach, read a K author, then an L, M, N...etc. Last year I only read books less than 400 pp. But the rest of this year, I'll read them if they come up. :-)

Charlotte is on page 407 of 944 of Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art
I am thoroughly enjoying this book, but it is a tome. I want to finish, and will, but I am also ready to be done!

The print is tiny, the book weighs about as much as a gallon of milk, and it has some issues with structure that make for a lot of repetition. The author, who writes in an engaging and readable way, arranged it by person rather than chronologically, and I'm never quite sure where we are in time.

Hopefully I'll finish this tomorrow. I can't quit at this point out of respect for Joseph Cornell, but it is terribly tough going.

Charlotte is starting My Family and Other Animals (Corfu Trilogy, #1)
I'm not going to finish this book. It's the use of dialect to emphasize the "foreignness" of a resident of Corfu contrasted with the English family that comes in demanding features in a house that they have no reason to assume they can obtain--and then they wind up treating the "foreign" person like a servant....ugh.

I'm having to put this on pause because the library recalled it for someone else. It's a lovely book.

Charlotte is starting The Magician's Nephew (The Chronicles of Narnia, #6)
Despite being listed as #6 of the Narnia books, this is really a "prequel," and in my box set it's labeled #1. I haven't yet read it so thought I would. I don't plan to re-read the whole series. I think they've dated quite a bit, although they do whisk one away. I always wanted a wardrobe with another world through the back, although probably it's a bad idea, and one should stick with the world one got.

Charlotte is starting All Passion Spent (Vintage Classics)
There's a wonderful old British series of this book with Wendy Hiller. I bought a used DVD but it has a lot of issues. Glad to have the book to read.

I love the British idea of an "impoverished" aristocrat, but I don't begrudge this widow her Hampstead dream house and her retirement free of social obligations. It looks like a great read, and I'm about to start!

Well, I am NOT going to make my reading challenge this year. And that is OK because I read "Ducks, Newburyport" and I'm pretty sure that should count as 4 books, which puts me one ahead!!!!!

I intend to finish this wonderful book this weekend (I have a 3 day weekend) because I am now a book behind on my reading challenge! I was like six ahead there for a while. It's almost December! :-)

Maybe the Goodreads Reading Challenge should be based on number of pages, not number of books. I'm starting to think I won't get 50 books read this year, and it is all because this one book is so long. And yes, I WANT to finish it, it's great.

Am I really going to read 1000 page book after just finishing To Walk Alone in the Crowd? I guess so. We'll see how I do. I haven't picked it up from the library yet. I hope I'm strong enough to carry it. :-)
