Not normally the type of book I read. It has been a pleasant surprise. I had to look up the Napoleonic Wars, and learned about the War of 1812, and how the Napoleonic Wars indirectly pushed Napoleon to sell the Louisianan purchase to the US. My reading and history upbringing was woeful, but better late than never.

The interplay of class presented in the book is really surprising to me.

Engaging, but has some sloppy editing. I like his humble approach when discussing the topic of humanism, and I found his descriptions of our epistemic processes helpful. He intro to ethics is jumbled to say the least.

The book is filling in a lot of interesting points for me from a period I knew little about. One point I think it makes is that brutal partisanship has been with the US a long time and is nothing new, as well as the tendency for media outlets to attempt to shape politics.
