Reminds me a little of Dealing with Dragons, all the daily life details. I love how calm the story is, spending time on childhood events rather than racing ahead into quests. And the storyteller voice going off into worldbuilding asides.

Are the kids going to learn to talk to each other, like in Decision At Doona? I really like this plot - humans might have a brutal past, but many can move beyond it and embrace difference. And stand up for others!

Mermaids and diplomatic conflict resolution? Sounds like my thing! At first I was worried this would be YA-y, but I'm really enjoying it. I like the protagonist. She stands up for what's right, even when she's scared. I'm really excited to see where the mer/naiad conflict goes. I wasn't expecting this to be an AOW book, but Jade is brown! And that plus the political themes qualifies it.

Very good. But a warning: don't read ch3 if you are in any way afraid of spiders

If I had to pick one word, it'd be liminal. I love the in-betweenness and the gender play and the distant faded feel
