"First we cooked our food, and then our food cooked us." Thinking about food and DNA and how some people have evolved to accept certain diets and others haven't. All bodies aren't evolved to eat Western diet, that's why we have health problems.

"Even the most ordinary dish follows a satisfying arc of transformation, magically becoming something more than the sum of its ordinary parts. And I'm almost every dish, you can find, beside the culinary ingredients, the ingredients of a story: a beginning, a middle, and an end." Take bread for example, it's dry flour, and water & with the process of mixing, rising & baking, it becomes bread.

"Many books about fashion begin with an argument for why we should take fashion seriously. I'm going to take a different approach and say that fashion largely deserves its bad reputation. It's now a powerful, trillion-dollar global industry that has too much influence over our pocketbooks, self-image, and storage spaces. It behaves with embarrassingly little regard for the environment or human rights."

Given the current influence of sophisticated electronic media technology and the glorification of consumerism, it's becoming increasingly difficult to provide children with an environment that encourages creativity or original thinking... The time and space available for our own ideas and their own images... shrinks with every film or tv program-inevitably accompanied by a flood of "tie-in" toys, books, and clothing.

"By marketing nursery linens, mobiles, and crib toys decorated with brand logos or images of licensed characters, marketers are doing exactly what they can to ensure that babies will recognize and request similarly adorned products ranging from cereal to stuffed toys as soon as their verbal skills evolve."

"Comparing the advertising of two or three decades ago to the commercialism that permeates our children's world is like comparing a BB gun to a smart bomb. The explosion of marketing aimed at kids today is precisely targeted, refined by scientific method, and honed by child psychologists."

"Before any words are spoken, before one makes any gesture toward the other, there is a feeling. And that feeling loses intensity and purity when translated into words or gestures... But if someone figures out how to communicate that big feeling- how to master a moment of soul... Because jazz musicians improvise... What's inside comes out pure."

Mixed feelings about this book. I like the biographical sketches but am slightly uninterested in the sports portions. Joe Rantz has had a hard life and it's eye opening to read about it, I also enjoy the character of George Pocock. The writing style is okay, not my favorite: it's a little too flowery.
