Interesting. Snappy writing, stream of consciousness and loose punctuation. Thematically harmonious with the last book I read (reflective autobiography) but this book is not a narrative… It’s a fictional retelling. Lot to munch on here.

This one always makes me depressed but I read it anyway. First time I read it was before my father passed and I often thought about this during the cancer years. Returning to it again feels like burying myself alive. Hitting too close to home… Will counter this by reading Joan Didion after.

Our narrator has lost her spark! Her earnestness in “The Idiot” outweighed any accusations of pretentiousness. Selin was a little odd, drenched with dry humour, and a critical (over) thinker. With Batuman’s prose, I felt I could embody her while reading. In comparison, Selin in this novel is so disjointed! I especially hate that the tangents from #1 are now simply namedropping facts (perhaps to sound smart??)
