I really enjoyed “The Last Kingdom,” but I’m 65 pages in to this one, and I’m strongly considering not finishing it. I get the feeling Uhtred is not going to grow as a character and is never going to discover what’s actually worth fighting for. He’s a man whose only center is himself, and I don’t want to stay in that perspective longterm. It becomes a depressing slog, despite the fast paced action.

I cannot believe the day is finally here! Did anyone else nearly tear up over the dedication? Warmed my LJ-loving heart and I wasn’t even one of the OG Sounisians.

Starting chapter 2. This book came up in conversation with a friend, and my interest was piqued. I have a feeling I’m going to deeply disagree with many things Bauman says, but I’m going to try to accept the challenge and see what I can learn or how my own thinking can be sharpened.

Unless Pratchett just bombs it in the last 120 pages, this is going to be a 5 star book. Great character work. Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. A real sense of excitement and drama. There’s less humor than I expect from Discworld, but this is my first of the Watch novels, so this could be right on track. I’m just really, really enjoying it.

Guess I’m going to be on page 314 for a while. My copy goes from 314 to 379. I’ll have to order a new one. I was so excited to get over the halfway mark, too.
