oi! - one of the short stories does not age well at all. It's all about black women's beauty and their sexuality and totally objectifies both black and white women. Yuck. I suppose that might be the point, but I don't think WCW was so far ahead of his times... But then again, there is so much going on in these stories, so who knows???

This book is just so fascinating! I had no idea how this had played out in terms of the narrative about the program constructed by the Canadian press. These poor kids were all branded as 'guttersnipes, delinquents, and criminals'. I am really hoping the author manages to get some of the children's voices in the book too - so far, nothing :(

Slow progress on this very bleak and sad story that I can see will only get bleaker and sadder. sigh

yeah i have a soft spot for sebastian barry. I luxuriate in his story-telling, which sounds corny but is true. he likes the first person narrative and does it really well.

recalled! arg. i ended up ordering it from the book depository because I have too many library books right now (same old, same old I know).

geez, the library is kicking my butt with recalls.
So far this book is quite a frustrating read. His critique of the news industry makes sense in a philosophical way (he basically wants news-writers to provide more context and analysis, or more bias as he likes to say) but I think the implications of such a shift might cause more problems than it would solve. But I am only on page 60 so this assessment is premature
