Perhaps it is the timing, but I found this to be an outstanding book. I knew almost everything she presented, yet the deep grief I have due to the recent death of my daughter has clouded my thoughts. Today, I am more hopeful that I can live and find joy again.

This is a history of how society and the medical community viewed autism. Once, going without food, impervious to pain and temperature, demonstrated not autism but holiness. In the 1960s and 70s autism was blamed on mothers. Mothers were vilified as wanting their child dead, as "refrigerator" mothers. The struggle to understand autism has mainly been parent led. We have come a long way, yet we have far to go.
