Maya Harvey is finished with The Alchemist
My favorite book this year is probably this one. It is a book that teaches the meaning of life and how all things have souls, so all things need to be cared for. However, the author was able to take this complex theme and turn it into an exhilarating story, rather than a boring text-book type of book. The plot followed an optimistic boy in search of riches, but he found a type of moral treasure he wasn't expecting.

The only two characters I could compare with this book and another I have read this year is Santiago and Laura Jean, from All the Boys I've Loved Before. Both of these characters are trying to find the meaning of life. Santiago is finding his Personal Legend by traveling the desert to find his inner self. Laura Jean is finding her meaning of life by separating herself from society and learning more about herself.

I would interview the main character, Santiago. Santiago is a Shepard boy who was just told it was his destiny to find a hidden treasure many miles from his home. I would ask why he trusted the gypsy and the king that told him this. I would also ask him what his definition of an "omen" would be because the book keeps mentioning how they'll guide him to the treasure. I think he would say they are subconscious spirits.

So far in this book, many things have happened. The mysterious girl that Quentin fell in love with for her philosophical ideas disappeared, but not without a trace. It seems as if she left clues for Quentin to come and find her, such as a note in the door hinge and subtle names of music albums. He also found an abandoned building with a mysterious map and calendar in it with hint of the girl's location.

We are introduced to the main male protagonist, Quentin, at the beginning of the book. He is your typical geeky boy who just cruises through life playing video games and wondering what the cute will bring him. We can see how he begins to change when he is taken one night to the top of a tower by a deep girl named Margo, and he realized that his life is insignificant in his paper town, so he must change his story.

Maya Harvey is finished with Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)
I choose to read this book because I had been reading a lot of realistic fiction lately, so I figured a book about witches and voodoo would probably satisfy my hunger for something different. This book has compelled me to read the next in the series because it always had me hooked in, and if I put it down for a while it was easy to pick up. I have improved as a reader because I can understand big books faster.

I choose to read this book because I had been reading a lot of realistic fiction, so I wanted to read something more fantastical. I figured witches and voodoo would probably fit this category. also, the cover was very enticing, and the description was very mysterious. I actually got this book from the school librarian, and he had never read it, so I was excited to finally read a book that he hadn't to one up him.

My book is about a witch (called a Caster) and a mortal boy who fall in love. The Caster is under a curse where she will either become dark or stay light on her sixteenth birthday, so she and her boyfriend are going against their families' rules and using a dark magic book to lift the curse. While on their quest, they struggle to keep their reputations in tact while fighting off the most evil of creatures-teen girls.

I really wouldn't like to be a character in this story. This novel takes place in an isolated little town where the only thing people can talk about is bad gossip about each other. Also, it is obvious that something very bad is going to happen, because this witch in the story can create devastating storms when she is angry or in danger, and I can already see clouds brewing.

So far I have only gotten into the meat of the exposition in my novel. So far, all of the characters have been introduced, and all of them have lots of secrets. We have learned that the two main characters can read each others minds, which might help later in the book. We have also seen some scenes foreshadowing the future because the two main characters share eachother's dreams, or should I say nightmares.

So far, a boy named Ethan has fallen in love with a "Caster" named Lena. Lena has lots of powers, but just discovered she could communicate with Ethan through her mind. Lena was bullied at school, so she ran off and Ethan followed, and when they were together they found a locket with their last initials on it. When they both touch it, they see visions from the Civil War. Does this mean they will repeat history?

Gabe is a character in the story who fell in love with the main character's mother. He is compassionate, which he learned from his father. Society taught him that love is never reachable, but he decided individually that love makes him a happy person. He is strong, the usual male stereotype, but because of his love he learned to craft delicate toys and things for a baby that wasn't even his own.

The purpose of this book is probably to show people that there will always be someone out there who will love you for who you are even when everything seems hopeless, but in the meantime being alone is not that bad itself. This audience is definitely for adolescents that think they have social anxiety. I bet the author probably wrote this because they had similar social experiences with being alone.

I can't relate to my character's personality, but I can relate to her family life. I can't relate to the main character because she has huge wings and feels like she doesn't belong on the real world, but she's cool with that. I can't relate because there is nothing about me that separates me from the rest of humanity. But I can relate to her family because I have a better relationship with my dad than my mom.

So far this book has focused on the family history of a winged girl named Ava Lavender. It started by talking about her great grandmother, who had the talent of being able to disappear from the common eye, then it talked about her grandmother, who had the power to notice supernatural signs in nature, and her mother, who had an incredible sense of smell. All of her ancestors had been deceived and crushed by love.

If I could interview anyone in my book, I would interview their dog, Argos. I would ask him if he felt responsible for the safety of his human masters, and if he had ever seen animal Unconsecrated, and what they would be like. I am sure he would say yes to the first question, but I'm not sure if he would do it out of love or because he thought the main characters would release him to die.

This story would be very different if Lord Voldmort was the narrator. All of the protagonists (specifically Harry) are portrayed as brave, kind, noble, smart etc, especially in the Seven Harrys chapter. Instead of recognizing how brave it was for all of the characters to risk their lives saving Harry, Voldemort would have called it foolish and would have made them all look like frightened mice on broomsticks.

The best part of this book is how it grasps the concept that no good thing can be perfect. In this book, there are a group of kids that have interesting super powers. However, all of these powers come with prices, so they are actually realistic unlike Superman and Thor. For example, one girl named Flicker can see through the eyes of any living being, but she can't see through her own eyes because she was born blind.

Maya Harvey is finished with For What It's Worth
This book took place in the early seventies, about a fourteen year old music fanatic. He had to learn to cope with the war going on, but to make it harder, he had to care for a war-runner wanted by the police. He started to turn to the Quija spirits of J. Henrix, Mossison, and Joplin for help during this rough time. He made many sacrifices, for his family, girlfriend, and himself, but his music saved him in the end.

I would never ever want to be any character in this book. All of humanity is basically dead, and there are only a couple humans left. Every character still alive in this book is always battling with death, from constant infections to running for their lives. I also would not want to be the invaders invading Earth. I would not be able to kill that many beings without hating myself, even if it meant saving my own kind.

So far I am still only at the rising action of this book. We have met all the characters, including Ben, Cassie, and the Finisher, and we know the story is during an alien apocalypse, so the exposition has been covered. Now we are starting to follow the lives of these characters and their fights to survive. Both Cassie and Ben have lost their families, so I have a feeling they will meet up soon to face the Finisher.

This book really pulls at my heart strings even though I just started it. I would rate it 10 out of 10 because of this. It's amazing how touched I have been by this book so far. The main character could have killed herself a while ago, but she lives just out of love for her brother, which brings out such a strong emotion in me. I would recommend this book to anyone complaining or whining about how bad their life is.

Maya Harvey is finished with The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1)
If I was the author of this book, I would change the powers that Magnus and the Sword of Summer have. I really didn't like how the sword did all the fighting while Magnus just watched it. When Magnus grabbed the sword again, he would feel the same strain that the sword did and faint. This made Magnus seem weak and lame. I wish he actually wielded the sword and fought with it instead of watching it fight for itself.

The main conflict in my book so far is Magnus trying to find the Sword of Summer. This sword will either hold back Ragnarok (Doomsday), or it will bring it forth. Magnus is trying to find the sword in order to hold it off, but he has to battle many Giants and Gods in order to obtain it. He has already escaped his warrior afterlife, attended his funeral, and fought two sea monsters just to find this wonderful sword.

A lot has happened in the past 300 pages of this book. First of all, ten Death Eaters just escaped Azkaban, and the Daily Prophet insisted that it was because of Sirius. Then Harry took the initiative and told the world the truth about Voldemort in the Quibbler. Lastly, Umbridge and Fudge thought they caught Harry in a DA meeting, but Dumbldore turned himself in instead and escaped from Fudge just in time.

I think the author's purpose of writing this book was just to entertain an audience. I think the author wanted to create a fun, magical world where people of all ages could escape to when ever they please. She might have tried to teach some lessons as all books do, such as responsibility and keeping your temper, but other than that, I think this is just a book you're supposed to read for fun.
