such a surprisingly optimistic book so far! even while it's chronicling world war 4 i've been suffused with a love of human ingenuity and kindness for the last 100 pages

man, having read all of ann leckie *before* reading left hand of darkness is a strange experience. leckie is great, and i'm ultimately more interested in the stories she tells and the people she tells them about than i am in this one, but then to see those same themes in their original form, in the hand of a true master...

and i can't be too far off in guessing that left hand of darkness is also a star trek, no?

what's this, a satisfying end to a plot arc? from Pynchon?!

didja know that pinballs are sentient beings from an irregularly-orbiting alien planetoid

Very intriguing so far. A bit Gormenghast by way of The Locked Tomb. The plot hits the ground running, the characters sing! A liiiittle infodumpy though. A lot of "as you know, Lanie, Firstname Lastname is the ruler of Countryname" and the classic 'reader gets character description when character looks in mirror' opener.
