Excellent writing, fascinating story. A thoughtful, imaginative twist on devils and angels.

Did I mention that this reads more like a compendium of scholarly research papers than a normal book? Kind of like those books that Stephen Hawking used to compile. This one's compiled by his old buddy Roger Penrose.

I picked it up because I wanted to find out where my story Eye of the Beholder stands in the scheme of things. Turns out I've been pretty much on the mark.

That's all I really have room to say here.

That is, if you're interested in nonfiction books about topics like cosmology and quantum physics.
And didn't read this book 20 years ago when it was first published.
And haven't yet read Smolin's latest, called Einstein's Unfinished Revolution.
And have been wondering if my own latest book, Eye of the Beholder, is on the right track.
All of which are true for me.

This is a book that lends scientific support to the story I tried to tell in Eye of the Beholder. And includes some points I left out. I may go back and add them.

Rayne Gray is a fascinating character.
He is called the Seraph, and he is a spadassin with a conscience.
What is a spadassin, you ask? Spadassin is a French word, meaning swordsman, and Gray is that, but it is nearly synonymous with the more familiar word "assassin." He kills at the pleasure of those who hire him to do so. And here I have run out of words for this note, so I will continue it elsewhere.

The story begins with an Act of God. Not so proclaimed, but the Moon explodes from some as yet unexplained cause.
(Never did get explained, but no matter. The book is Stephenson in pure sci-fi mode. He seems to have abandoned his old insouciant style of late, and I miss that. But the whole story is hyperbole, and that is still his strong suit. Nobody does it better.
