Books change you. They mess up your insides. They make you drool over the prospect of being a better human and a better lover and a better friend. They pull at your stomach and leave you raw and open and naked. Books can straight up mangle you and sometimes it’s just better if you let them do their work.

the whole sense of time and history in the book is very loose. i feel lost in parts because of the interchanging life stories of alma, leopold, and litzvinoff. but i persistently tell myself to enjoy the lyrical prose, and hope that it'll all weave together beautifully in the end.

wow, i'm learning about world war ii and italy, concomitantly.

But suddenly, with the need to take a concrete human being for a confidante, I build my framework of a world around you. I don't write this to you, because it is not time. I may never tell you, and, in years, I may not need to, because you might become part of my life - - - physically and mentally ... and there would be no need to verbalize, because you would understand.

Once again love life day by day, color by color, touch by touch, because you've got a body & mind to exercise, and that is your lot, to exercise & use it as much as you can, never mind whose got a better or worse body & mind, but stretch yours as far as you can.

As for free will, there is such a narrow crack of it for man to move in, crushed as he is from birth by environment, heredity, time and event and local convention. How do I know? I don't; I can only guess. I wouldn't be I. But I am I now; and so many other millions are so irretrievably their own special variety of "I" that I can hardly bear to think of it.

How we need that security! How we need another soul to cling to, another body to keep us warm. To rest and trust; to give your soul in confidence: I need this, I need someone to pour myself into.

I like people too much or not at all. I've got to go down deep, to fall into people, to really know them.

You become the labels you give yourself. So have a healthy pride in who you are. When you don't celebrate who you are, you lack gratitude for the One who made you.

Each day, as part of my prayer, I read my dreams and present them to God. I declare it anew to myself, to the world, to the universe. I remind myself of my future.
