Notes: Aleyse demands to stay with the Franciscan monks since she's not Benedictine and there's no Franciscan nunnery for her to join. The monks think she could emulate St. Claire and to draw other women to the Franciscan way.

It's written VERY Y.A and modern

So the negroes are cleaner, steadier and overall better tenants and they're still charged 50% more than the white European tenant for the same property. "Once a negro occupied property, always a negro occupied property".

Premature grief?

Hiking, grief for one still alive, the fleeting feeling of connection to strangers that you encounter more than once, the desert imagery, struggling for creative energy, self doubt, being too much inside your owb head, the vulenrable condition of being a caregiver to a sick husband. All themes I either highly relate to or deeply fear, and the protagonist's way to relating to them is tender, admirable,verging on funny

The desert imagery combined with the stream of conscience style makes for a very relatable, endearing protagonist. It's addictive.

The dream- evoking cactus that has shown her her father as a child playing, and the talking rocks she's carrying with her and has given names, and her being characterized as the type of person who could never find her car in a parking lot without specific directions and a picture - but didn't figure to mark the path she'd picked while facing an unmarked three way fork in the hike. Chaotic and engrossing.

This is a hallucinatory(?) quick read, what's-her-name has been injured on her hike and crawling through the desert, muttering the funniest of thoughts

This is THE most enchanting, heartbreaking character study I've ever engaged with. It's beautifully written, each member of the fanily is flushed out, no detail spared - and they're all just incredible human beings built from their interpretations of their past experiences and watching everything unfold through multiple perspectives is validating, comforting experience that sheds light on ny own life and interactions
