Pichourin is my kind of guy, I like his personality and directness. However this isn't a very memorable book so I doubt I'lll remember him in a month.

The second part is basically Pichourin chatting up a young Russian princess, not nuch of an adventure thus far.

Brummstein was interesting, I loved the info dumping and learning about geology and the buzzing stone. I loved seeing it being passed from hand to hand a touching upon a short chapter in German history. The writing was succint and it felt written by someone with his childlike curiosity and sense of adventure still intact.

At this point I'm not sure this novel is going to have any sort of conclusion or a tied up end for its characters. Walter will tire of datingPhoebe, or more likely shr'd be tired of him. Justin will maybe partner up romantically with Yinghui and they'd become a business power couple. Gary will rebuild his career and Phoebe will fall into his arnms when he confesses his true identity ob their nighttime chats. Too long

explores loneliness from all angles. Dark and depressing at times, uplifting at times, but always fascinating.

The exploration of characters and their relationship, how they argue, what makes them cave or not express themselves as coherently as they're used to is so real and raw. I love it. The emphasis on urban exploration, discussions on gentrification and land greed and developement on top of historic yet unwanted building is heart wrenching. Shanghai vs Kota Bharu, KL vs its subrubs, it's all so lovingly described.

Unputdownable.

Except Phoebe, all POVs are mainly flashbacks and reflecting on their past, which is interesting but feels a bit repetitive.

Mapping the human genom

Most of the book feels like a long Wikipedia article solely about the experiment that supposedly concludes with most of the foxes being stolen for their furs, but then towards the end you jump back in time and it goes on a tangent about human evolution and the science of animal behavior and then linking it back to the fox experiment. It results in an non uniform chapter structure and was weird.
