"We would meet our destiny. But was it a disc that made it true? Or our dogged pursuit of it? Will the world end in darkness because it is foretold? Or because there will be those who believe it so strongly they will make it so? In the fear that I always try to hide in my heart, I wonder if there is even a difference."

Randomly picked this up whilst pet sitting. Loving it so far. It follows his lifetime in relation to the earth's condition, a plethora of facts about the natural world vs our developed world, and also a plea for action. The audiobook is narrated by the man himself, for whomever has the desire to hear his famed, rich voice emanate from their speakers.

It's strange, isn't it, how that idea of belonging to someone can sound so great? It can be comforting, the way it makes things decided. We like the thought of being held, until it's too tight. We like that certainty, until it means there's no way out. And we like being his, until we realize we're not ours anymore. (74)

I tended to give a book a chance and another chance and another, sometimes seeing it through all the way to the end, still hoping for it to be different. Maybe I was confused about what you owed a book. What you owed a person, for that matter, real or fictional. (p. 41)

Eleanor is so GD socially inept it is both painful [in its awkwardness to those exposed to her (in all her glory)] and hilarious! I kind of love her, she's so clueless and a little creepy. I'm so keen to get into the thick of things and find out why the heck she's so messed up, and what happened to her mum and this fire?!

Tell me why am I on a WWII binge at the moment? Blimey, this book is good. No wonder it's an award-winner.

So far, ho hum. So much exposition, and the characters don't feel all that fleshed out. Reads a little more juvenile than expected. Is this marketer as YA? If not, it should be.

Curse my stubbornness! I can't bring myself to DNF this book because I need to just be done with it all and finally have closure. I remember really enjoying the first book, the second book was okay . . . this one is so boring, not engaging, messy, riddled with juvenile language and cringe-worthy dialogue. The characters are kind of annoying, and I find that I just don't bloody care anymore! Ugh, but I'm almost done.

Reading up on dystopian novels in case things blow up. Basically I'm studying the real survival guides here, clearly. XD Is anyone else on a dystopian novel kick or is it just me?

In the evening they tramped out across a field trying to find a place where tbeir fire would not be seen. Dragging the cart behind them over the ground. So little of promise in that country. Tomorrow they would find something to eat. Night overtook them on a muddy road. They crossed into a field and plodded on toward a distant stand of trees skylighted stark and black against the last of the visible world. --- prose
