Picked this up today while my phone was getting replaced.
A Dusk of Idols by James Blish
This collection is off to a weak start. Poses an interesting concept for a foreign planet but then puts that completely aside to have a little action adventure romp. Instead of engaging with the original concept at all, he just wraps up by saying “because symbolism!”.
