It’s a level of awareness that can cause offense. As an adult, Jesus was to make many remarks pointing to it, and risking outrage. He told people to let the dead bury their dead, that brothers and sisters would fall out over his teaching, that he had come to bring a sword. This way cannot be understood morally. It only seems objectionable, confusing, and wrong.

Lady Davenant's foreboding having already been so far accomplished struck Helen fearfully, and her warning voice in the dead silence of that night sounded, and her look was upon her, so strongly, that she for an instant hid her head to get rid of her image. "But what can I do? her own life is at stake!

Cardinal St Peter Damian wrote a letter to Pope St. Leo IX, also known as the Book of Gomorrah, that emphasized the divine imperative to punish those who engaged in sodomy. Drawing on the Pauline insights into God’s punishment of sodomites with moral blindness and abandonment to increasing depravity St. Peter Damian wrote, 'While they are slaves to sin, he does not permit them to see what they need to do...'

Arthur pierced him with his lance, so that the sunlight shone through Mordred’s body. The deadly wound is the last time Mordred knew inner warmth.

Dante glances across the lake. He sees a thousand faces looking like dogs, frozen purple with cold. To this day, he adds, when he sees an icy pond in winter, he shudders at the memory.

Just finished the Book of Tobit, one of my favorite Old Testament books. I did not remember it told of the destruction of Ninevah.

We're also reading the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 11.

He was then convinced, that from Madame Montoni he had nothing to hope, for what of either pity, or justice could be expected from a person, who could feel the pain of guilt, without the humility of repentance?

Virgil and Dante make their escape from the demons fighting among themselves, humbled by the errors that led to the entanglement with the Malebranche. They walk like friars minor, lowly monks, along the top bank between the fifth and sixth bolge. They try not to draw attention to themselves.

Contrary to Pope Francis’ assertion that converting other Christians is a ‘very grave sin against ecumenism’, Vatican II insisted that there is no opposition between the conversion of other Christians and ecumenism, ‘since both proceed from the marvelous ways of God.’

Pope Francis and Cardinal Fernández’s Dignitas Infinita is fundamentally irreconcilable with sacred Scripture and sacred Tradition’s understanding of the nature of God and human nature. By claiming that man possesses an inviolable ontological dignity, in contradiction to doctrine on original sin, Dignitas Infinita’s anthropology descends to the level of gnosis.

They looked from one to the other, not with suspicion but faced with a sudden fact that they knew each other and loved each other for a certain reason, because they had to take on a war together, but there was so very much one would never confide with the others. Trust? Good lord, no question that each trusted the other with his life, but not his secrets.

Although this is supposed to be the sequel to Trinity, it's actually retrospective, retelling unknown parts or going back to known events but highlighting aspects which were obscure or only partially related. In the first book we only learn of Kevin O'Garvey's side of the deal which affected so many in Bogside. Here we see how Andrew Ingram was also in on it as well. We also learn about Atty's youth.

Very presumptuous is he who believes himself to be inspired & presumes to lay down the law for himself & others! Very foolish he, who welcomes inspirations but little conformable to common sense & faith! "This person," says St. Teresa, speaking of herself, "never regulated her conduct by the inspirations she received in prayer; when her confessors told her to do the opposite, she obeyed w/o the least repugnance."

Souls who make progress in Purgatory are those who have someone to pray for them. Punishment is suited to the sin. Justice binds avarice to looking at the ground as it wasted all its opportunities to do good on earth. Sloth gets no rest but must be on the run non-stop. Jesus teaches: “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven ... for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Dear Lord, must I go to me grave without Rory once having a taste and touch of my true feelings? All our conversations end in ruin. After a time, one stops even thinking about having them, it becomes that futile.

It was now the hour that melts a sailor’s heart and saddens him with longing on the day he’s said farewell to his beloved friends, and when a traveler, starting out, is pierced with love if far away he hears a bell that seems to mourn the dying light, and I began to listen less and fix my gaze, intent upon a soul who suddenly stood up and signaled for attention with his hand.

God communicates to the soul a most vivid knowledge of His amiable qualities; this light sharpens her desires & her torment. The pain is so great the body is tortured by it; but of this the soul has no perception at the moment, so much more poignant is this wound of the spirit.

We can do everything for them, and they can do everything for us. It's like being in the place with the spoons with the five-foot-long handles. Everyone would starve if they tried to feed themselves, but if they feed each other they thrive!
