Feels like an author's will is being imposed a bit - hard to really lose oneself.

Should've taken a Dark Material's refresher, particularly the last one.

It's an odd little number. A prequel, so we know where this ends up. Also only a quarter through and I can pretty much guess HOW we end up where we end up, due to all the clues. The other three-quarters needs to pull some surprises out of the hat otherwise, why am I reading it?

On the other hand, perhaps I should have read this before writing Neon Sands - it's given me so many tangential ideas. Good story
