DNF at 20% - tried to read it for a triple play on the Goodreads fall challenges but it wasn't for me. I found the writing a bit..not flat but plain. And it's just generally not my kind of book to read. -I think I could've gone with the flow in an audiobook but not physical or ebook format.

Had to return but waiting impatiently to get it back
Ch. 1 requires/or benefits from a reader already quite familiar with Paris, french, and french history.
Ch 2 about the green belt seemed more accessible to me but perhaps also more in line with my previous studies of space and place.

Erasing or minimizing the value of women's history, manners, movements/conditions contributes to this insidious invisibility of women's labor, masking itself as something that's always been that way when these household tasks are actually pretty recent as far as human history

"nous sommes porteurs d'une histoire qui nous dépasse". Modern couples end up reproducing traditional gender roles. Why? Because we think we have free will, that were individuals just making choices outside of time and history, but we carry that history /those stories, traditions, gratuites etc within us without even being aware.

Really glad I read that intro! Helped prepare me for the writing style.
Ada- I had to read this one aloud/in my head to catch the rhythm. It reminded me of someone telling the life story of an acquaintance, trying to imbue it with a lot of meaning despite a lack of substance. I could imagine some lines being read in a round, overlapping each other. Lives and stories entwined, beating drums separately and together

Wait i just realized that chapter was called coercion and organized crime. How did customs tariff evasion for tea and nutmeg fall into that category?
And the ending about offal was.... pardon the pun, just awful.

Did we just go from tea to nutmeg to prohibition in a page and a quarter?... Without any heading to explain? I'm getting dizzy!
