unfortunately so far I am really not getting on with this translation. if a poem is about Tai Shan please call it Tai Shan or Mt Tai, not “exalt mountain”. that is unnecessarily exoticising for the sake of it.

i’m searching this entire book for a mention of the literal war in afghanistan next door and coming up empty. you don’t think that might also have been relevant besides 9/11

the subject matter is really interesting but the way the authors characterise very complex political situations feels very simplistic and orientalist at times. oh we're going to take british claims that an ethnic group were professional thieves and murderers that needed to be subdued for the sake of the empire at face value??
