Really enjoying it so far! Feels a bit like His Dark Materials.

I gave up about 2/3 of the way through. Bleak bleak bleak.

Too many books in queue, I want to come back to this one though. I am just beginning part 4.

This is the literary form of Michael Jordan choosing baseball. He was a great athelete, so yes, he could play baseball better than the average Joe. But he was a miracle on the basketball court -- why walk away from miracles? JK Rowling is a gifted and inspiring world creator -- why would she choose to write mediocre crime fiction? Gah.

So far I'm just sad that it isn't another Harry Potter. While this book is fine for the genre it isn't brilliant and in fact feels weaker to me that NightFilm which had a similar plot. Something incredible is going to have to happen before it lands a coveted 5, and at this point it's iffy for a 4 star rating. Sad. I feel like this is Michael Jordan opting for baseball.
