It's definitely Proustian in scale, but not, so far, in the complexity of the thought. Still, it's an enjoyable read and one that shouldn't take me nine months to complete.

I haven't yet reached the "slow" part I've been warned of—or, if I have reached it, it didn't feel slow to me.

Love it. I usually read only in the morning, but this is a can't-put-it-down experience.

I majored in religious studies, so the breezy explanation of Jewish, Christian, and Buddhist perspectives on marriage feels a little shallow, but I also think she got the characterizations correct. I found the analysis of the transformation of marriage from a primarily economic institution designed to benefit to the community to a romantic institution designed to benefit the individual interesting.

I'm picking up speed, partly by giving up on the New Yorker, which I'd previously read one day each week, and partly by spending more time reading.

I'm halfway through in both pages (2,100/4,200) and books (3/6--this edition treats "The Captive, The Fugitive" as a single book). While not as dull as similar passages in various scriptures, the genealogical parts of "The Guermantes Way" made it difficult to maintain the momentum of my reading. Book Four, "Sodom and Gomorrah," seems likely to remedy that.
