Westlake had the craft and discipline to sit at his typewriter knock out a novel in a week or two but this is the first of his books that reads like that’s exactly what he did. He has some fun with the introduction of a struggling actor character but nothing else about the scenario ever comes to life.

Been taking this one slowly and I feel it's the volume where Proust really "clicks". Marcel is no longer a creepy little man in a child's body, he is now a creepy little man in a creepy little man's body. All the Dreyfus material is very funny to me. Imagine if there was only one news story at a time, it was the only story anyone needed to have an opinion about, and it was the same story for ten years.
