YES. I love it when author's include historical and literary references into character development. Rhodes takes the story to the next level.

AIR RIGHTS!? We can OWN air.... There is a lot of interesting information in this book but that part really stumped me.

"I'd drunk the social mobility Kool-Aid from college prep programs run by white people when I was in high school and didn't know how to reconcile all that with what I was seeing in Flint."

From the start, I always fall in love with Sepetys' styles of characterization and plot development! A true master of storytelling.

"It was as if the process of decay, of slowly dying, was already begun in him."

As a young child, I also found it fascinating that adults had their own names. Some names seemed to belong to grownups exclusively so I believed for a long time that I would get a new name that signified my level of maturity. Good times 😂

"It wasn't fair to have waited for so long to read a book that was less than what I'd imagined."

To reread something during two completely different eras of maturity is one of my favorite pastimes.

"P.S. Be eleven" hits home so easily. Stay young... grow up...mind your business...know the business. Being a kid is hard.

Her language has a heartbeat.

This is exactly what I had hoped for and listening to audio right along with it has made it all the better.

I hate when I feel like I can't articulate the emotions that a piece of writing evokes. On another note, I like how this novel is paced in between chapters. The story is very believable (outside of the obvious historical context).

Finding out your friend isn't really your friend is a hard pill to swallow when you're a teenager. Sometimes it hurts to see the world for what it is. The purity young people hold is sucked straight from the soles of their feet everytime they take a step.
