The fact is that there are no periods in this epic tome. I don't know if I can handle it. Stay tuned.

Reading this book is a helluva commitment. It seems very shallow but perhaps that's what appeals to me....the descriptions of food and NYC (in the vein of lifestyles of the rich and famous) overlay some seriously dark and really disturbing themes. There is nothing light about this book but I think the author manages to capture a balance.

I got this book from the books by mail program in my province and it was an out of province request so I only had it for a short time and had to return it before finishing.

The style of this book is unique and the subject matter is brutal. I might try to get it again and finish it because the author is brilliant and I would like to read more works by her.

I keep getting hauled out of the story.

There are no accents in any dialogue which might be better than badly done accents but outport newfoundlanders have a lyrical way of talking so it is really making me irritated that the author ignored this reality.

Oh my goddess. This book is brutal. And necessary. I had to stop reading it today for awhile after feeling like the wind had been knocked out of me after a particularly harrowing part.

I downloaded the Libby app. I'm trying ebooks, again, because it is quicker to get a recent ebook free from my provincial public library than an eventual (if ever) paper copy.

This published in 1826 sci-fi dystopian novel set in 2073 and written by a well known woman author is fascinating so far.

After the recent van attack slaughtering women in Toronto by yet another murderous misogynist I had to commit to finishing this book. All of it is still horrifically relevant.

Ugh. So many people in my life enjoyed this book.

I did the unthinkable and skipped to the end.

The characters were so weakly drawn I didn't give a damn. Even when I read the end.

This is a slow but very educational read for me. I keep googling for further/more current information and looking at my atlas. My recent travels there inspired me to find out more and this book is an excellent start - it is giving me a much broader understanding of geopolitics in that area and how these politics led to this genocide.

I visited Cambodia this past April and am trying to understand and process my experience with this little known to me country. I asked my local library to suss out books on Cambodia and this book came with my last box of books.

This book is enlightening me not only about Cambodia but the geo politics of how this horrific 1970s genocide came to happen.

I was given this paper book to read by a new neighbour who lost her Canadian Forces son in Afghanistan and this son gave her this book with a personal inscription.

Heavy slog. Necessary.

This 'beach reading' book took some dark and twisty turns in the last 50 pages. I've never read this author so I am curious with how it is gonna play out.

The fact that it is historically set in West Cork , Ireland- where my maternal line is from - is what has kept me engaged so far. I was gonna toss at @100 page mark.

This is not an easy read for me (writing style spanning 100 years of letter writing/journal/1st & 2nd person narrative... arabic names that i can't pronounce let alone fully imagine the character despite wonderful descriptions...a country I know nothing about beyond the magnificent library of Alexandria and the pyramids and King Tut). It is pushing me out of my white canadian-irish comfort zone - I'm fascinated.

I am enjoying this book but just stumbled on a really sloppy editing mistake that took me right out of the story. A character in 1945 could not have worked at pumping gas at Petro Canada since that Corp didn't even exist until 1975.

I've laughed out loud a few times already I live in small (tiny!) town now and come from some dysfunctional irish family lines so it's quite easy to picture all of this happening. Wonderful character development so far!

I am only marginally enjoying this book. She has some fantastic poetic descriptions. The dialect of dropping the 'the' throughout the text is disruptive to me - it is perhaps something in rural northern england that I am unaware of.

The character development is shallow. I find it hard to believe that this strange gruff family sits around and chats so much each day...maybe more of these chats need to be detailed.

In the first few chapters of this book I was reading with my former city slicker mind, 'The tragic premise is unthinkable...this couldn't happen'.

But then all the open secrets I know about in my new (4 yrs) tiny rural Canadian town came to mind. And the author is from Cape Breton so presumably she has lived this her whole life.

So now I'm devouring it with pleasure.

This the first book I have read by this author. The gender neutral pronouns are difficult but I'm finally used to them.

It is refreshing to read a book that has no romantic plots so far. I can't even think of a recent book I read that didn't have even a slight suggestion of at least one.
