Tupper Malone is finished with Pachinko
An interesting perspective especially concerning the discrimination of the Japanese toward Koreans and Chinese. I am currently in workshops about racism in America toward people of color. Tribalism exists in every culture, the only difference seems to be the degree to which extends the nth degree being murden.

I've decided to leave the book before finishing it. I know I should finish it but I totally get the message. I agree with the message.

I LOVE BRIAN DOYLE'S WRITING. I READ THE FIRST CHAPTER AND CRIED. Don't ask me why. It was the second reading of the page and a half first chapter, reading it aloud to my husband and I started the second paragraph when my voice cracked. By the end of the paragraph and the chapter tears were in my eyes. Maybe I was crying because Doyle took such joy in writing about his children and himself. Such joy in writing.

Don't know if I'll be able to continue because the modern day vernacular is so jarring. This is suppose to be the mid-1500's, the time of Shakespear. I don't expect the arcane usage of words but really, this is ridiculous. Everytime there is dialogue, it puts me back to the 21st century and makes the whole story incredulous.

I didn't finish this book. After reading three chapters, although the story might be interesting, I didn't like the narrative style, third person telling the story. I skipped ahead to read the first page of a later chapter and determined that the third person telling Irini and Alma's story was not for me.
