Okay, it's been a while since I read Stephen King. Decades. And I remember him being good with capturing the behaviour and dialog of characters. Making them seem familiar. But man is he betraying his age. Everything about these characters and how they behave is anachronistic, like King thinks it's still the 70s and has completely lost touch with how people in the world today act and speak.

Like the protag, I was a 30-something guy in 2006. I didn't call teenage girls "honey." I didn't see guys a few years older than me walking around with neatly trimmed moustaches and wearing tweed suits. In King's 2006, everyone behaves and talks like it's 1978. An educated 30-something guy has a 12 year old kid. Older women have their hair curled in beauty salons and wear cats-eye glasses. People say "let's boogie."

As thorough as I'd expected. Brings 50s Liverpool to life.

I had to chuckle at Lewisohn's charitable assessment of young Lennon. He calls Lennon broadminded for hanging out with boys younger than himself. I think we all know what kind of boys hung around and bossed kids younger than themselves. And there's also a word for boys who will push you over unless you push back.
