Good book, but not for this time in my life.

Listening to an excellent audiobook performance that definitely raises the value of the experience. Some reviewers find it less than profound, but perhaps that is the very thing that fits it perfectly into my need for a cozy bedtime experience. Fascinating to get the perspective of a family of Middle Eastern Jews intermixed with Arab society. Tragic to experience their dispossession. Will these outrages ever end?

Phenomenally dense, well-argued, comprehensive history of the concept of racism, from the ancients till now. What jumped out is the way ancient Greeks and Romans introduced the ideal blonde female slave as prisoners of war and poverty. Painter parallels this with muscular make slavery whose color and physiognomy have never to this day settled on any definitive metric other than power-holder instrumentalism.

So excited to see this one in Crow Books (used books downtown Burlington, VT). Big asset to "the 'Self-Reliance' Project" for my blog (and soul)!

Man, this was not my cup of tea! I thought I would like it because I liked Savannah. I thought I would like it because it portrays a transwoman really well. But within an hour I concluded I was reading a really bad comic book, so I skipped to the end, and tomorrow it goes back to the library.
