So good

Some compelling chapters about China's police state, but takes too long to get started, is repetitive, and strangely impersonal considering the subject matter (especially compared to other books on China I've read lately, Made in China and The Corpse Walker). The end chapters about the West's reaction to China were strong.

Persevering

This is highly overrated. Starting to skim.

On its way to becoming my first 5-star book of the year. Already changing my buying habits, but the book is engaging, not a lecture. “For the next three years, Lee would assemble Christmas lights and Homer Simpson slippers between force feedings” wtf

We believed salami was spontaneously generated by freedom.

We turned out to be ill suited for the new world we’d been waiting for. We were expecting something else, not this. We’d read a boatload of romantic books, but life kicked and shoved us in another direction.
