Such an intriguing set-up of the relationships in this story!

Picked this one up because I wanted nature writing but aside from that, I’m really enjoying reading about the complex mother-child relationship

Loving how the characters are well drawn and the plot is suspenseful but also immersive.
Looking forward to continuing on.

So far, this is one of those impossible situations that I am not sure it can be resolved and still make me happy for every character so I am as intrigued as it is possible to be to see how this goes

I love that this is set in a resort with children whose lives show that everything isn’t perfect in paradise but it’s still a beauty to behold 😍

Wishing I was buddy reading this one with someone. Just ended Part 1 and there are some aspects of the story that are chilling to read and others that feel like aren’t happening fast enough. The initial attitude towards the planning for the Fair seems like it’s going soooo slowly

Brilliant discussion of what it means to have dominion over others, self, and the circumstances under which these relationships come about and persist.
Some parts of the story seem a little murky when you are learning the characters and how they relate to each other, and perspectives switch in each chapter but the whole novel highlights late 1600s Americas and the political, religious and social quests for freedom.

This is addressing anti-Asian attitudes in (a slightly futuristic?) America. A really thought provoking storyline so far.

So far, this is an interesting look into a fictional African country Jidada during a change of regime in a nation peopled by animals. Natural animal characteristics seem like the obvious choices to distinguish hierarchy but author NoViolet Bulawayo also gets into Biblical references, about who gets called a savior and how a kingdom is experienced by the subjects.
About 1/3 into the book and intrigued how it will end
