It’s maddening. The story has two time periods: one set in 1320 and the other in 2054. The plot in 2054 is that no one can reach someone by phone and they’ve exhausted all possible strategies to contact them. They’ve predicted a global pandemic and right-winged politics to separate the UK from the EU, both the book, written in 1992 has no concept of the internet or the mobile phone, which did exist at that time

Dense. Explanations come, but many chapters later. Sometimes, a book later.
