Reading this in the Folio Society edition, part of their five-volume 'Middle Ages' set, which retitles it 'The Crucible of the Middle Ages'. Pretty interesting. He is unimpressed by Charlemagne in some ways, in particular his failure to ensure the continuance of his empire after his death.
