This book comes straight out the gate swinging, and I'm here for it. From the introduction: "Unfortunately, our love affair with fish is unsustainable."

And on the next page: "The perception-changing moment for the oceans has arrived. It comes from the realisation that in a single human lifetime we have inflicted a crisis on the oceans greater than any yet caused by pollution."

Yep, still reading this book! It's hardly uplifting, but it's oh so important and I'm grateful for finding it. Every chapter is so dense with data that I can hardly read a page without swimming off to write a five-paragraph essay; I'm leaving myself endless notes in the margins.

"Remember, brunch is served only once a week—on the weekends. Buzzword here, 'Brunch Menu.' Translation? 'Old, nasty odds and ends, and twelve dollars for two eggs with a free Bloody Mary.' One other point about brunch. Cooks hate brunch."

This edition features handwritten footnotes and afterthoughts by Bourdain (and entire pages covered in doodles), and it really is (bittersweet, yes, but also) so delightful.
