This book is so good but I just KNOW something is going to happen UGH

“Why wasn’t friendship as good as a relationship? Why wasn’t it even better? It was two people who remained together, day after day, not bound by sex or physical attraction or money or children or property, only by the shared agreement to keep going. Friendship was witnessing another’s slow drip of miseries and long bouts of boredom, and occasional triumphs” (p 257).

“Was it better to trust or to be wary? Could you have a real friendship if some part of you was always expecting betrayal?” (p 144)

“It frightened him. [...] But what if Malcolm never again created anything? He longed for the years when it was enough to simply be in his room with his hand moving over a piece of graph paper, before the years of decisions and identities, when his parents made choices for him, and the only thing he had to concentrate on was the clean blade stroke of a line, the ruler's perfect edge.”

I don't think I've read a book with more dialogue (internal and external) than this one. It is almost entirely dialogue. Descriptions of places and actions are a few sentences at most, and everything else is either thoughts or chat. I think I'm going to skim to the end just to finish it.

I really want to like this book but I'm so disappointed. :( The writing isn't engaging and the descriptions are lacking, and I'm having a hard time envisioning the setting. The internal dialogue sucks and I cringe at every "for the win." Debating on pushing through, or giving up and trying something new.

Not going to lie, I am struggling to get into this book. The writing just isn't grabbing me-- reads a little like fanfiction. 😬

“I glance at the map to be sure I'm not making a fool of myself. "That is Chakir right there, isn't it?" Scribe's training for the win” (p. 73).
I cringed. Maybe I'm more of a literary purist than I think I am. But I'm going to stick it out!

“I can take it off your hands right now and you will never crave ramen in the fall again.” (page 21)

Crap this book is due at the library tomorrow so I need to make some progress on this. (⊙﹏⊙)
