Neveah is starting Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy, #1)
A year ago I started reading Sarah Rees Brennan after falling down a flight of stairs and in incredible pain. A year later I’m starting to read the series I was originally recommended. In the interim, Sarah remains the only author I’ve awkwardly frothed at about how wonderful and meaningful her writing was and is at Chicon. Thank you Sarah, for writing books about awkward love and people and plot twists and fun.

Quick short story that gives a bit of context to one of the ongoing moments in the series. Satisfying!

ARRGGHH WHY ARE THEY STILL IN MEETINGS???? If I wanted an entertaining meeting (this isn’t), I’d do it myself.

Wow, this heroine is stupid, judgemental and (perhaps because of this) a poor judge of character

I have found a solution to reading this book. It’s now propped up on my dining room table so every time I eat, I get more. And this book is great. Wedgewood’s wooden leg? Tea services of frogs? Disgusting experiments with ‘short lived mice’. All there. Plus most of it is about the local environment, as I live ten miles from Etruria. And you never know, in another three years it may be finished!

Argh the first Christmas play, which is As incomprehensible and boring as most of the others. Otherwise this one is charming but not stand out.

This book is written in a really weird tense!! I feel bad critiquing it after the vast amount of bullshit Wendig has experienced, but for me it’s a bit heavy on the slice of life interjections (although I get why they are there, and this must have been a really specific brief so I appreciate it being really fiddly to write). Readable and fun, not quite my style (it’s not you, it’s me!).

Oh jebus, in which Alyssa Cole goes to Scotland. Is this what Americans really think we are like / sound like / act? And how did the heroine get a pepper spray through Customs??!!!! All this and more...

I read most of this on the plane to Worldcon and finished it at Birmingham airport. And it was a hard slog. Novik’s books are so 50/50 for me at the moment, and I loved the early Temeraire books as well as Uprooted, but this one just dragged. Ah well.

Fast and a wonderful read. Again, the crime itself is a bit of flummery for the actual story, but so. This was fun and light and it has a beautifully diverse cast. Will definitely be reading more

Really enjoying this. Not the first time the author has dealt with how people with autism, trauma or extreme phobias deal lived in a time where they simply wouldn’t have been understood, and I wondered if this was based on a real incident. Excited to read the end and discover what our heroes think, and less interested in the murder itself, which takes a sideline throughout most of the book.

Rather like the Rogue Not Taken, this is about someone who can’t see their own worth, this time unless they are being a big blousey popular person. I know most romances have a happily ever after, but this book is making me unutterably sad.

A friend gave me this because his friend wrote it and now I’m not working. This has me right in the feels, it’s incredibly blunt about being young and depressed. I was worried the humour would become a ‘look, we can all laugh through depression!’, instead the ghost acts as catharsis in the early stages of the book. So far it’s made me cry - I suspect working from home was a bad idea today...

I think I have a book hangover from the previous few excellent things I’ve read so am currently sticking with it, but this ‘Ready Player One’ for horror seems to have been written in the most irritating way possible. Stop switching to a screenplay! Stop using such contrived similies. And above all, is anything actually going to happen???!!!
