Ohhhhh this is terrible. Getting through it only to check off a Book Riot category.

Delightful. Entirely worth having to track it down from a used book seller. So glad I got the sequel just in case I loved it!

First story very good, second story WONDERFUL, third story so far very good

We’re reading a chapter at a time, M reading out loud while I painstakingly strip a wallpaper border down. Highly motivating!

Very much enjoying the Bronx review of HP Lovecraft’s racist nonsense. Wouldn’t have fit in The Fifth Season but it sure works here and is a delightful bit of meta for readers who enjoy NK Jemisin’s public profile that won’t stand out to those who don’t.

The first third of this book is a complete story with a solid arc and barely any dangling plot threads, which makes me absolutely fucking fascinated to find out what the rest of it is going to be.

Oh! It’s a graphic novel! Well, that certainly explains the price, lol

LOVING this. It has lots of character stuff that isn’t scary at all, with these interspersed moments of fear like an EKG, and they keep getting scarier but all the pauses for character make them bearable and also more exciting/terrifying.

Ooh, it’s gettin’ spooky! Switching to something lighter for the rest of the evening ...

Not at all my preferred prose style, but it’s got my attention anyway. (Reading it for the Book Riot challenge, anyway, so “not my usual” is good!)

Once again, an incredible number of errors that seem to have been introduced in the publication process. These books are too good to let that dissuade me, but I’m so goddamn tired of publishers firing their copy editors and charging money for uncorrected proofs

LOVING this. I was a bit skeptical of the protagonist being a white Brit but the author is doing a terrific job using his lack of knowledge as a new arrival to help set the scene for the modern reader. Also wonderful use of/attention to language and language politics. Just generally having a fantastic time, and I’ve heard the sequels are even better, so VERY excited about that!

Incredibly poorly copy edited (for which the blame of course lies with the publisher, not the author)—frustrating! But the writing is instantly engaging, so I’ll do my best to read past all the errors. A number seem like they were introduced by the publishing process rather than uncaught typos—a lot of missing spaces and apostrophes, in particular.

Why is this choir chapter formatted differently from the rest of the book? Couldn’t get on board for it. Skimmed until I reached the regular next chapter.

Was under the impression there was a nuanced, complex question of allegiances and prejudices between Sabran’s country and the Yscalians but uh apparently the Yscalians are just cartoonishly evil instead

All the parts with women are great; all the parts with men are boring. Luckily there are way more parts with women.

Kept seeing this recommended, but the only ebook option was Amazon. Finally opted for the paperback; means squinting but I hate the Kindle monopoly. Good news is, so far this is definitely worth the cost and the eyestrain—loving it!

Enjoying this homophobe accidentally opening up big important new ideas to our young heroine. “What has she meant about ‘playing the man’s part in private’? ... the substance teased at her imagination. ... How would a woman kiss while playing a man’s part?”

Oh wow very glad I came back to this because part three is where it truly kicks off

Need a soothing, happy read after She Said and it’s instantly clear this fits the bill. I like an author who can have me smiling fondly about a character by page three!

Didn’t realize there would be a big section on Kavanaugh. Not sure I can make myself read it.
