It's hard to have empathy for the narrator but the insights about how to recognize RAD are great. She is a great writer and I appreciate her realness and truthful thoughts. It feels like she's spilling her guts not giving practiced textbook explainations. I'm hoping for the family life to get better but I'm not sure it will. It's a little depressing.

Having gone to a reservation recently to help with a church group this book was really interesting to me. It shows the flaws in a person even as they are going somewhere to help. The thing the comes blaring of the page to me is all the racism in this book. I wonder if people reading it in the 1940s and 50s could see the racism.

I love reading about trains from people who have experienced them in their heyday. I think of all the things that have happened since that they could never have imagined, like the internet.
