So it started out a little slow and the prose was sort of purple, so I wasn't sure why it won the Pulitzer. Then he gets to America and holy shit it gets good.

Okay, I get that this is supposed to be some kind of portrait/allegory of post-apartheid South Africa... But it's a really shitty one.

Good prose though, in a sparse Hemingway sort of way.

So I put down the book I was reading previously because I wasn't equipped to handle a rather graphic death scene involving an infant... only to pick up a book where the main character is literally haunted by the ghost of her dead infant. IDK, man. Morrison's prose is arresting and I can't stop reading this.

This was probably stunning in the original Spanish. This particular English translation is full of Britishisms, which makes the dialogue sound odd.

I can't do it, guys. I'm on the last 200 pages, and I REALLY want to know how it ends, but I lost the book somewhere. And I'm not too motivated to find it just so I can finish it and thus move on to the next thing on my list. I'll probably pick it back up someday.

Stephen Colbert the commentator is a genius. "Stephen Colbert" the character is good only in 30 minute doses.
