A small criticism I have of this book so far (I don't know if this will be addressed later on) is that sometimes our fears of other people reacting to our boundaries with hostility, anger, or accusations of selfishness are not just unrealistic fantasies, but based in very real experiences. Sure, it's important to know not everyone will, but it genuinely does happen.

You ever experience the tragedy of finding a book that you just know would have blown your mind when you were younger but is now just passable, and mourning the experience with it you never got to have?

This book has been recommended to me and my specific tastes left and right, in many different contexts, so I'm pretty excited to dive in!

Pullman is writing this book like he anticipated that fans were not going to be happy with little Malcolm x Lyra ship and is actively trying to argue the reader into accepting it ahead of time before he pulls the trigger.
