This book is not what I expected and only pick it up when I have a spare moment. I had expected more of a philosophical read than it is.

I wanted to connect with this famous author before reading A Passage to India. I have seen the television movie adaption of Howards End several times and I have all the images of the actors playing their parts in my mind's eye as I am reading. A beautiful time, when life was so different.

First of the Jack West series read for me, Reilly has incredible imagination fast moving and quite a ride so far but I just wonder how much mythology can be included in a book? Descriptions of Mt St Michel and the Vatican put me into the book having travelled there but now at Mt Blanc and then where to next?

Just finished and until the last chapter a good read but with two people putting their hands up for ownership of the murders a little put off. Review to follow

It seems this book is movie bound. The book so far reveals similarities to Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky who was killed in Auschwitz in 1942. I have read the French version and loved it, one I could reread many times. The exodus from Paris is well documentated, Suite Française & the Nightingale has a French officer included with similar backgrounds. I will be disappointed & scathing is plagiarism evident.

I think the English translator has done a very good job, the story does get a little hard in recognising the family structure but now the grandfather is dead we can move on to the discovery of what happened after the war. Small village many secrets

This book reveals the facts about Australians and Americans(posted in Australia) code breakers and how with training from those in the UK they were able to predict Japanese strike plans. Having been to many of islands mentioned in the book and climbed over shot down planes rotting in the jungle, I am able to get a real connection with those relating messages to Allied posts whilst living in terrible conditions.

Loving this book, thank you to Netgalley for this opportunity. As an artist myself all accounts of the struggles very close to my heart.

Phrynne commented that I would enjoy this book and I have to say I love it, a beautifully articulated novel, I am there in the Metropol Hotel and my thoughts to Julian Assange unable to leave the embassy.

I have had to check on historical events to get a handle on this story and to get an idea of localities. The author I'm sure for the English translation explains some termonologies personal pronouns etc fortunately my small Turkish language skills have assisted me. Proper names are difficult to imagine in pronunciation as I discovered some vowels written are not pronounced.

Jeanette is reading The Mercury Visions of Louis Daguerre
Loving this read, France during great turbulance but still the life of artists continues. Daguerre is obviously badly affected by all the chemicals he has been using and Mercury, a substance that continues is well and truly taking over his body and mind.

Well I was in a bit of a quandry at the start of this book until I checked that there are accounts by different people. The beginning started with a frozen body of a woman who had been in the process of trying to escape the war. I feel I am going to be an anxious reader of this book.

I was given this lovely, slightly off key book from a friend who purchased it from a small bookshop while staying at my most favourite part of Paris L'Opera. In handing it to me she said that she had to read it twice thinking she had missed something and now that I am nearly at the end I can understand why as I think I will have to back track a few pages+QR codes?

I can relate to the narrator in this book, age is generally not kind to the body and memories that have impacted on one's life can always be difficult to bring back to the present. This is a beautifully written book and a joy to read. The mystery compells me to want to get to the end, or not?
