Anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot.

Reading dreams. That's what started her walking down the road. Every day she'd walk a little further: a mile, and come home. Two miles, and come home. One day she just kept on.

Both looked back then on the wild revelry, the gaudy wealth, and the unbridled fornication as an annoyance and they lamented that it had cost them so much of their lifes to find the paradise of shared solitude.

His only happy moments, since that remote afternoon when his father had taken him to see ice, had taken place in his silver workshop where he passed the time putting little gold fishes together. He had had to start thirty-two wars and had had to violate all of his pacts with death and wallow like a hog in the dungheap of glory in order to discover the privileges of simplicity almost forty years late.

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I didn't understand back then that something had begun. Something mysterious, powerful, unknown. Like dripping water piercing holes in stone. And it would carry on and on until it burrowed down deep, a cavity inside me.

It is not pity that you feel; you lament only because the victim of your malignity is withdrawn from your power.

Yet even thus I loved them to adoration; and to save them, I resolved to dedicate myself to my most abhorred task. The prospect of such an occupation made every other circumstance of existence pass before me like a dream, and that thought only had to me the reality of life.

My spirits were elevated by the enchanting appearence of nature; the past was blotted from my memory, the present was tranquil, and the future gilded by bright rays of hope, and anticipations of joy.

I was often tempted , when all was at peace around me, and I the only unquiet thing that wandered restless in a scene so beautiful and heavenly, (...) to plunge into the silent lake, that the waters might close over me and my calamities forever.

I feel the sincerest gratitude towards those who think of me with kindness. How sweet is the affection of others to such a wretch as I am! It removes more than half my misfortune.
