Finished the first book in this of this omnibus, and am enjoying the story. Nice ethical (political?) resonances in the contrasting relationships the wizards of the story have with the spirits, which I'm hoping will be explored further in the next book (enticingly titled "The Spirit Rebellion"). Also like the sense of mystery created by the fleeting appearances of "The Shepherdess".

Interesting in parts, but some of Oliver's claims about prehistoric culture are dubious, e.g. he explains the rapid spread of farming by assuming that land would have been inherited according to primogeniture in 5000 BC. Also it could bear some fact-checking: phases of the moon are not due to the shadow of the earth (which is only cast on the moon during lunar eclipses, which only happen at full moon).

Interesting in parts, but there's too much waffle (model of car Keiller crashed in 1929 is simply irrelevant) and it could bear some fact-checking: phases of the moon are not due to the shadow of the earth (which is only cast on the moon during lunar eclipses, which only happen at full moon).
