Miss Kelly is on page 62 of 272 of Once Upon a Crime (The Sisters Grimm, #4)
Up until now, Sleeping Beauty (who is described as having brown skin and doesn't have many things to say) is the only noticeably different skin tone. Now, we introduce "Mamma" Oooooo kaaaaay....

Shades of Mammy, anyone? Must there always be a wise but aloof magical black person? I guess I shouldn't be so disappointed, this series does completely ignore any folklore and fairy tale that is non European.

The farther I get in this series, the more I dislike our main character. Instead of growing into a better person, she seems to be getting more and more bigoted. The only good Everafters are "her" Everafters, or eat ones. Her home of NYC feels "tainted" because they live there.

Really? 4 books in, and when she started off with a semi sympathetic bend in book one...

I'm actually starting to feel uncomfortable...

"...all was as calm as a Presbyterian potluck." Ha! So far this book is funny but the humor is probably slightly above that middle-grade designation. But I'm enjoying it a lot.

So far, the "mystery" seems a bit ham-fisted, but the characters and the setting are intriguing, so I'm only mildly disappointed.

Short chapters are good for feeling like you are making progress, but not so good when it's 2 in the morning and you keep saying "well, that chapter doesn't count. I'll just do one more..."

Omg, no he DIDN'T!!!! Not the "me Chinese" rhyme?! I'm sure some people got pissed about that. Up until now, all the stereotypes have been perceptual. How the Asian people were perceived by themselves and others. This is the first thing I've noticed that was actually *action* and although I laughed in disbelief, I don't know if I like that part.

OMG - cousin Chin-Kee?! I KNOW him! Or, the black version of him, anyway. Pookie from around the corner, or little Tay Tay, or... That person you know who *is* every embarrassing stereotype, and you are absolutely mortified to associate with them, and embarrassed that you are embarrassed.

Although this book is about the Chinese experience, I totally identify with the "other"ness of it. When Jin started @ his new school & decided 2 stay far away from Suzy?! Yeah, black people sometimes too - especially at that age. When there are only a few of you, if U become friends, U R lumped together as a stereotypical unit even more than normal. So it is a very big decision 2 allow friendship 2 form.

The voices are really clear so far & they don't feel stereotypical. Sky is an art student hoping 2 get out of the trailer park w/ college but she doesn't think less of her friend with the 6 mo old & Josh's chapters have just about broken my heart w/ how sparse they are. & I think I like that. In my (limited) experience people returning from war generally don't want 2 talk about it 2 just anybody. Really nice so far.

Miss Kelly is starting Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings
completely ignoring the modern view of race and the view of race when this book was written. i STILL cant read through a page without feeling like I'm deciphering a foreign language. It makes me think of a lily white suburbanite dissecting rap lyrics in an effort to understand. regardless of the intent, the execution smacks of a complete lack of actual understanding.

I've read the first 5 or 6 stories. I really like some of the ones that are less well known. The size and heft of the book are nice, too. Not too big, not too small.

Painful. I wanted to like this, but any promise that the story had was bogged down in amateur writing. "I felt that..." Instead of just having him FEEL... "I was amazed that..." Just let him be amazed! I really wanted to push through it, but I had to give up.
