Putting on pause, because, sadly, I left my copy outside in the rain, and now I need to get a new one. It's so soaked, some pages are dissolving. I was very much enjoying this, though. Every word struck like a hammer to a nail with precision and the underlying web of universal truth as its greatest motivator.

"For the hero, fear is a challenge and a task, because only boldness can deliver from fear. And if the risk is not taken, the meaning of life is somehow violated, and the whole future is condemned to hopeless staleness, to a drab grey lit only by will-o'-the-wisps."

"Man with his consciousness is always a long way behind the goals of the unconscious; unless his libido calls him forth to new dangers he sinks into slothful inactivity, or in the prime of life he is overcome with longing for the past and is paralyzed. But if he rouses himself and follows the dangerous urge to do the forbidden and apparently impossible thing, then he must either go under or become a hero."

"He smiles back at her. It's weird, he says. I feel like if I created a new human being out of nothing, I would be very happy with them. Just that they were alive, even."

"If we organize everything in view of profit, we get things happening in the economy that make no sense. Like in this example, no one has a direct profit motive for teaching children, but the whole economy will collapse if people can't read."

"It is precisely the most subjective ideas which, being closest to nature and to the living being, deserve to be called the truest."

"Ideas spring from a source that is not contained within one man's personal life. We do not create them; they create us. To be sure, when we deal in ideas we inevitably make a confession, for they bring to the light of day not only the best that in us lies, but our worst insufficiencies and personal shortcomings as well."

Because I'm reading from a library book and can't highlight the passages I'd like to remember:

"The dream gives a true picture of the subjective state, while the conscious mind denies that this state exists, or recognizes it only grudgingly."

"Laws transforming the environment, which psychiatrists identified as a cause of the mental illness that produced crime, would give urban renewal a public health urgency."

"'I will grant you that,' said Mr Phillipps, 'but you will allow me to insist that in the hands of the true artist in words all stories are marvelous, and every circumstance has its peculiar wonder.  The matter is of little consequence, the manner is everything.  Indeed, the highest skill is shown in taking matter apparently commonplace and transmitting it by the high alchemy of style into the pure gold of art.'"
