I might be too sensitive for a book containing one story about death and grief after another. Not just grief from death either - grief of the loss of relationships and youth and opportunities. This is definitely heavy material. The slight moments of levity don’t do much to lighten the visceral feeling of depression.

Omg. I’m sobbing. This book has been so highly r praised. So far I don’t understand how so many people can enjoy this. The writing is beautiful, but the co tent is gut wrenching. I think it’s because it could so easily happen. The scariest tales are the ones that are closest to reality.

Maybe I just am not in the right headspace for this setting but I’m almost done with this one and I don’t get the hype. I mean - it’s ok? But the writing is a little repetitive and the plot seems like I’ve read it before. Hoping for redemption in the last 1/3.

So long. So sad. So many characters.
This time period has always intrigued me. The audacity of colonization, mixed with the beauty of the indigenous, and the danger of the meeting of these forces in an unforgiving wilderness….

I’m not sure if all the story lines will finally be tied together now with something recent that’s happened. That’s a rare feeling for me!

Jesus. This book is just one heartbreaking, unimaginable travesty after another.

This is a wonderful read so far and I have so many guesses about what’s happening, I think I know who killed Eevie and why and how Robin’s family died and why.

Making this note so I can come back later to my assumptions

I love that I’m nearly halfway through this book and I only have a small clue as to what is happening.

The title has given me a hint that this one might not be for me. I’m just a hair shy of halfway through and I’m fairly certain of what’s going on here. I think maybe Rice was just seeing what she could get away with at this point.

This is the perfect read for a frozen long weekend. I’ll be finishing this one today. Strong women, magic, mysterious family history, several POVs over several timelines. It’s my ideal cozy read.

I stayed up until 3AM.

This is such an incredible novel. So far, Tartt has made me weep for, adore, desire to protect, fear for, and then loathe her main character.

That takes some serious skill.

Can’t wait to see how this ends…and get some sleep 🥱

As a literary fanatic I’m supposed to love this. I hate it. I’m not up for a trudging through right now. I can’t DNF this one though. Onward….

Ummm. I don’t know if this is for me. I hate to shelve a book barely 5 chapters in, but there’s a little too much in this book that is just unappealing. A lot of sexualization, self hatred, abuse, and something in the voice of the MC that is bothering me.

This book reminds me of Harts in Atlantis by Stephen King. The story jumps fro one character POV to another and there’s a small twinkling of a common thread of supernatural/possibly malevolent beings tying each story together.

It’s like a sci-fi, coming of age/midlife crisis mix up. I like it.

This book is breaking my heart. I can’t help but feel that this is a story of a survivor, but wrapped in magic and mystery.

Gaiman is amazing, always, but something tells me that he has some first hand knowledge of what it’s like to be a child fighting monsters (aka adults) in a world that’s set it’s teeth against you.

I’m so disconnected to this story line and style of writing. This one is probably going to land in the DNF pile along with The Lost Apothecary. Probably need to do a little more research before picking things up solely based on the cover and a book seller’s panting review.

This book should maybe have had some clearer content warnings or maybe I’m just too sensitive. My stomach has been in knots through these first 75 pages. I’m going to keep going, but this isn’t what I thought it was.
