I have given up on the book because it's too self indulgent. The author spends way too much time indulging in the men's feelings and thoughts for the women about whom they're obsessed. I was more interested in the observations of family, street and city life, as well as the politics of the day. Unfortunately, too few words were spent on this.

Fabulous! Beautifully creative writing. Atmospheric, touching and intriguing. I found the start difficult as no character was likeable. Once the likeable Ambroses and Ransomes were introduced, the story’s energy increased. Want to read her first book now.
