Just began Libation Bearers for Classics and Western Canon group read. I wish I had time to reread Mourning Becomes Electra, too.

I'm on textured substrates now. Though I didn't think I'd care for the first lab in this section, most of the samples turned out well. I'm not sticking exactly to the experiments as listed. Sometimes I don't have a supply on hand, and sometimes I'm curious about something she doesn't suggest. I don't think it matters. The point is to experiment and learn, and I'm definitely doing both.

Have you ever had a book you hate to finish? I savor these, a sip each week, like a glass of fine wine.

Okay, I knew I probably shouldn't have picked this one up from the library while I had so many others to read. I was right, but I was in the mood for a dessert. This has proved a good one: a smart and spunky heroine entangled in a dark fairy tale.

The translator presents some interesting perspective on the religion of ancient Egypt, one I've never heard before. I'd like to check with an archaeologically-connected friend to find out whether his views are mainstream.

Lab 1 (gesso experiments) was terrific, and although I haven't enjoyed working with background papers (Lab 2) and diffused imagery (Lab 3) as much, I'm learning a great deal about how the materials react, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Passed through a section that needed a bit more editing. At least, I'm pretty sure they meant "sexual immorality," not "immortality," and "geographical" rather than "geological" exploration at the closing of the 15th century.

After reading only the introduction and overview and perusing the table of contents and materials list for the first lesson in chapter 1, I'm hopeful. The book seems logically organized and (delightful surprise) the first lesson requires no supplies that I don't already have. Amazing.

Poem 21 offers some wonderful lines to savor, both philosophically and literarily. And this, my favorite from Poem 22: "When the body is old, the heart becomes older still."
