Been ages since I have read Dirk Pitt. He puts Bond to shame. 30 or so pages in, meets a woman on a beach in the middle of nowhere.

"Hey."
"Hey."
"My husband died 8 years ago."
"You should get over that."
"Yeah."
"When's the last time you were with a man."
Sex ensues afterwards.

This is as terrible as I suspected it would be (sadly). The prose in uninspired. The use as Abraham as a main character (so far) is just being wasted. The research and use the of the setting is uninspired. There is time for it to improve, but I cannot imagine it will.

Again, great character work, but Ambercrombie books (in this first trilogy at least), are far too long for what you are getting. Also, Ambercrombie does very little exposition. Almost all of his work is done via dialogue, and although it works most of the time, it is hard to picture the world people are inhabiting. All we know is is it is dark and violent (which may be enough).
