Khakpour just arrived in Wicker Park, Chicago, and I learn that she and I wrote for the Chicago Reader at the same time. I never did meet her face to face, though.

Terrific opening. Wish I had time to just sit and read it cover to cover!

I am beginning to wonder if this book is one of the things we all should be reading to better understand the current regime under which we are reading. Seriously. In 1968, Jim Brown, Sammy David, Jr., and James Brown all endorsed Richard Nixon for President of the United States of America. I think I'm beginning to understand the Trump era differently because of this retelling of Black politics in the late 1960s.

After surviving the racism prevalent at Syracuse University throughout his time there, Brown said, "for the rest of my life, I will never let anyone tell me what I can and cannot accomplish. As a black man in America, I would draw on that credo again and again."

I had not seen the story evolving this way. Nice surprise.

Riveting and edifying.

Religion. Medicine. Economics. Law. Morality. Justice. This little book has it all.

Not sure about this book. Not sure at all.

"Without Food, Your Ass is Going to Die" is a good chapter. Might have to use this one in class.
