This is an interesting book. I found it buried underneath my other dhamma books. It takes place in Burma just before WWII. It has strong buddhist themes and was originally published in the 1950s.

"People are always asking, Why did you choose to rescue Siamese? There is no single answer to that question other than if your mother loved something, and then you grew up with that something, it seems to become a part of you."

"Never mind what I have been taught. Forget about theories and prejudgments and stereotypes. I want to understand the true nature of life. I want to know what this experience of being alive really is. I want to apprehend the true and deepest qualities of life, and I don't want to accept somebody else's explanation. I want to see it for myself."

"Suffering is a big term in Buddhist thought. It is a key term and should be thoroughly understood. The Pali word is 'dukkha', and it does just mean the agony of the body. It means the deep, subtle, sense of unsatisfactoriness which is a part of every mind moment... the essence of life is suffering, said the Buddha."

"To come right down to it, if I take the kind of things in which I believe, then add to that the kind of temperament that I have, plus the one hundred percent dedication I have to whatever I believe in-- these are the ingredients which make it just about impossible for me to die of old age."
