I've barely started this book, and yet I already love it. It is filling the hole for well-researched, incredibly human palace intrigue histories left by Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell trilogy. Plus, the descriptions of pre-Hispanic foods are incredible.

It's possible I don't actually care about the body. Trying hard to stop my DNF streak, but I'm finding it difficult to commit to books right now.

It's time to admit that it's time Ms. Wharton and I part ways. My modern sensibilities find reading her prose an arduous task.

This is an incredible book to read in the context of Goodreads, where the top reviews are by the author's brother and sister-in-law, who dispute several events recounted in the memoir.

LMAO I thought this was the book about Yellowface in The Nutcracker and was happy, but confused about it being part of Reese's book club and the super long hold times at the library. Now that I know it is an RF Kuang novel, I'm braced for something more excruciating.

Struggling to finish this as it's so, so long when the content could have been a captivating and practical ~120-page book.

This is from the library and is helping me remember Spanish because it is a familiar story that is written for children. I'm done buying products that benefit the author.

...so, I'm a fair bit into this book and *just* read the synopsis. This sure sounds like a good book, according to the summary. I've been pretty bored so far. Wonder when the fantasy will kick in.

Really struggling to finish this one. The Brock Turner chapter was incredibly insensitive. I like the Janelle Monet breaks between chapters.

I got a special "one week only!" loan from the library and I didn't finish on time and now I am on a four week hold. Hate it when this happens with books I'm enjoying!

Italy chapters were good. India chapters were cringe. Couldn't finish Bali before the loan from the library expired.

This was a DNF for me a dozen years or so ago. I wonder if I'll like it more now that I'm approximately the same age as the author when she wrote it. I also no longer care if things I enjoy are uncool and have an easier time celebrating other's good fortune. We'll see!

If you can believe it, my childhood recollections of this book were only mostly right. Apache boy is mysterious and cool (recollection was right). White boy is contemporary and boring (recollection was right), but he was possibly neglected, clearly bullied, and generally vulnerable due to circumstances outside his control. So I can't really say he sucks (recollection was wrong). Also...no memory transfers yet.
